Have I mentioned how much I love freecycle? This is a great organization. The best part is that I get rid of a lot of stuff that I don't have to pack.
Speaking of packing, my office is starting to take shape. I have split my junk into categories, i.e. Take (which are already in boxes, yeah me!) Decide, (which may hit freecycle or our tag sale). Sell (depending on the item goes on Craigslist, ebay or tag sale). Throw out (which is in a large garbage bag). I'm not done, but am getting there.
Now the groaning part, the garage. I need to do the same thing there, but I'm just not motivated yet. Dharma wants me to sell the upright game, that's being stored down there, but I just can't wrap my head around that. Yes it's and old project waiting to happen, but I have so many plans for it. Yes I know it takes up a lot of room, but I've already committed to getting rid of a few large items. One is my portable basketball hoop, gone to a freecycler. The other is my baby, The Purple Beast. No I don't think I'll sell my coke machine, but I may have to, to fund our trip.
Other items that will go: My grandfather's bedroom suit consisting of two twin beds, two night tables, and a chest of drawers. My old flour cupboard that came out of our family farmhouse. My desk with printer stand and a two drawer file cabinet. Two kitchen chairs that I got off of freecycle. My grandfather's collection of cameras. My 42 in. HDTV Mitsubishi tv that took me forever to get, but I'm afraid she won't make the trip across country and she takes up a lot of space. The futon couch. The 50 year old chairs that came from my grandmother. I think that's everything.
I have a feeling of loss, especially giving up my baby, PB, and I know it's silly, but the Centipede game is like the proverbial straw. I have firmly planted my feet against giving this one thing up. I realize that I have more stuff than Dharma, but sheesh, give me one thing here. And no, that's an invitation to ask me to choose between my coke machine and my centipede game. The coke machine is my ace in the hole. She'd bring much more money than the game, and if I have to give her up I want at least one big toy. If I commit to giving up the upright arcade, then I have nothing. Except maybe a chest of drawers left. Oh and my office chair.
Yes I am a big baby, especially when it comes to my toys. I think I've made a really good case for keeping my one large item. Right?

save it for last? if you really need the money, as you approach your departure time, then sell the centipede. i'm with you, man. we need to keep some of our toys (if we can).
Keep them both! And I want all the furniture you're getting rid of...can't you just swing a little south on your cross-country trip?
i totally understand. no advice, just comiseration.
i've lost or had to divest myself of just about everything 2-3 times before. it's hard.
right now, in terms of furniture i own, i'm down to one chair and 3 bookcases (two of which are in the pantry storing food. the other is also in the pantry, with books and cds). i have a couple things (brand new media storage shelves and brand new computer desk) in t's garage and a desk chair in storage. those will be going to new homes, so i don't count them...
the hardest, though, for me, are the books...
good luck with it all.
